Tuesday evening nearly 10pm our time and on third tusker. Some of my fellow volunteers are playing Trivial Pursuit on the sofa next too me and are getting mildly cross with me for keeping butting in with some of the answers, yes I know a bit of a miracle me answering T.P. questions must be the climate.
Anyway this is my third night here and very much enjoying myself apart from being petrified on N0 6 and No 7 Vervet, more to come on that.
Arrived in one piece from Mombasa thanks to Ken (thank you Ken) and was very agreeably welcomed by Andrew (Assistant Manager), Bob - Dutch Vol, Claire and Anna - French vols. Also I was welcomed by Eric, now Eric it must be said isn't quite human more Sykes (monkey that is) so therefore his name Eric Sykes, hopefully you British will get this pun.... Anyway Eric is only 4 weeks old and is so cute, not to Andrew that is as he is Eric's 24 hour Mummy and Eric screeches when he is left by Andrew.
Eric wears a little nappy to bed and drinks from a bottle, well used to until No 6 nicked the teat and he now has to drink milk via a syringe. Bed being Andrew - apparently he lays on his neck all night apart from when he wakes up demanding feeding. Eric is very fickle, won't come to you then suddenly when there is a threat from Vervets or Baboons he is straight on your shoulder!
We had new volunteers arrive from the UK on the Monday Morning four in total, Sarah, Jodie, Sam and Tom. They are all Uni Students, three zoologists and one Vetinarian, they are an average age of 21. So we now have a full house, 8 volunteers.
On Sunday night, we went for pizza and beer and then an earlish night. Was actually quite a novelty going out for a meal and seeing a 'full' restaurant. Tourists are here, which is something we haven't really seen since we have been here.
Monday was pretty much taken up with orientation and education about our 'monkeys', environment and the area. We didn't do much work or in actual fact no work apart from the obligatory going down to the white sandy beach and the azure sea....
Anyway more to follow later as am going to join in on the Trivial Pursuits rather than shouting from the sidelines.
